Living in the southern hemisphere and preparing for winter getaways

Winter getaways are all about slow, dusted scenery and hot drinks by the fire, and while we may be coming into summer just now, it doesn't mean you can't stop planning your winter break right this second. Before you dive into snowball fights or hit the slopes, you want to make sure that your suitcase is packed with all the right essentials, because nothing ruins a winter holiday faster than feeling cold and unprepared.

It's not the same thing as packing for the summer either, because when you're going on a winter break, you need to make sure that you're thinking about your layering. HeatHolders thermal underwear for example, makes for a cosy base layer that can make all the difference when the temperature drops. If you're not sure about what you should be packing for your winter break, let's take a look at some of the suggestions below.

  1. Start with a base layer.

We just mentioned having thermal underwear, but your base layer is your first line of defence against the cold. Whether you're hiking, snowboarding or just thinking about going to Europe or the Uk and pursuing Christmas markets, you need to make sure that you have a good set of thermals on hand. You want something that's designed to trap heat without being too bulky, which makes the thermal underwear we already mentioned ideal for everything from morning walks in the snow to long days on the slopes. Once you've experienced proper thermals, there really is no going back.

  1. Wear waterproof outerwear.

Even if you're planning a relaxed trip full of sightseeing and mulled wine, the chances are you'll be spending a fair bit of time outdoors. Having a warm waterproof jacket is the basics. Pairing these with snow friendly boots are a must have. You can find plenty of options for coats that are windproof, breathable and have room for layering underneath. And don't forget insulated gloves and a hat. You'll thank yourself when the wind picks up.

  1. Versatile footwear.

You might not be packing any sandals for this particular break, but footwear can make or break your winter holiday. You'll want a pair of sturdy, waterproof boots for snowy or icy conditions with a good grip. At the same time, think about packing something lighter and cosier for indoor wear or lounging at your accommodation.

  1. Pack some entertainment.

A winter vacation is the perfect excuse to slow down and unwind. Outdoor adventures are half the fun, but evenings spent indoors can be just as memorable. Not only do you want to pack a good book, but a travel size board game or even a downloaded playlist or movie collection can make a difference too. Add a pair of fuzzy socks and a mug of hot chocolate and you've got yourself the perfect apres-ski setup.

Packing for a winter holiday doesn't have to be complicated. Practical gear, lots of layers and entertainment will mean that you're ready to embrace everything the season has to offer. Plan ahead and pack smart and you'll be able to stay comfortable and ready for anything.
